功能描述

受体酪氨酸激酶，与相邻细胞上锚定在GPI上的ephrin-A家族配体混杂结合，导致接触依赖性的向邻近细胞的双向信号传导。受体下游的信号通路称为正向信号传导，而ephrin配体下游的信号通路称为反向信号传导。在GPI锚定的ephrin-A配体中，EFNA5最可能构成EPHA5的天然/功能性配体。在发育过程中作为轴突导向分子发挥作用，可能参与视网膜顶盖、内嗅皮层-海马和海马-中隔通路的发育。与EFNA5一起，还通过调节突触发生在成体大脑的突触可塑性中发挥作用。除了在神经系统中的功能外，EPHA5与EFNA5的相互作用介导胰岛细胞之间的通讯，以调节葡萄糖刺激的胰岛素分泌（根据相似性）。 {ECO:0000250}。

组织特异性

Almost exclusively expressed in the nervous system in cortical neurons, cerebellar Purkinje cells and pyramidal neurons within the cortex and hippocampus. Display an increasing gradient of expression from the forebrain to hindbrain and spinal cord.
