肌动蛋白和肌球蛋白结合蛋白，参与平滑肌和非肌肉细胞中肌动球蛋白相互作用的调节（可能在肌球蛋白和肌动蛋白丝之间起桥梁作用）。刺激原肌球蛋白与肌动蛋白的结合，从而增加肌动蛋白丝结构的稳定性。在肌肉组织中，通过结合F-actin抑制肌动球蛋白ATPase。这种抑制作用被钙-钙调蛋白减弱，并被原肌球蛋白增强。与肌动蛋白、肌球蛋白、两分子原肌球蛋白以及钙调蛋白相互作用。还在细胞有丝分裂和受体成帽过程中发挥重要作用。参与周围神经再生过程中施万细胞的迁移（通过相似性）。{ECO:0000250, ECO:0000269|PubMed:8227296}。
组织特异性
High-molecular-weight caldesmon (isoform 1) is predominantly expressed in smooth muscles, whereas low-molecular-weight caldesmon (isoforms 2, 3, 4 and 5) are widely distributed in non-muscle tissues and cells. Not expressed in skeletal muscle or heart.
